If the Swedish dishcloth is new to you, here is the short version. It is a flat, flexible cloth made from cellulose and cotton, produced in Sweden by the official Swedish Dishcloth Company. Dry, it is stiff as card; wet, it softens instantly and drinks up to 15 times its own weight in water. That absorbency is what lets one cloth chase a full countertop spill without dripping a trail across the floor. Because the cloth releases water just as readily when wrung out, it air-dries in short order and stays odour free, sidestepping the mildew smell that ends most sponges' careers early.

The waste math is the other half of the story. A single cloth does the work of 15 or more rolls of paper towel before it wears out, and when it does wear out, after around a year of regular use, it is biodegradable and fully compostable. Three cloths, years of wiping, nothing to the landfill.

Getting the most from them

Keep one at the sink for dishes, one for counters and appliances, and one for the bathroom or the entryway.
