The cap absorbs every start and stop across the working life of the machine, and it fails in slow motion. Worn pivots let it sit crooked in its aperture so the press lands off-centre and the switch beneath it only sometimes trips. A split cap goes further and leaves that switch open to the dust it was moulded to keep out, which is how an intermittent fault turns into a permanent one.
