Miele names its motorized carpet heads Electro, and the SEB 217-3, SKU 6543860, is the midsize model in that line. A motorized head uses its own brush roll to agitate carpet fibers directly, which pulls embedded dirt and pet hair out of the pile in a way suction through a plain nozzle cannot match.
The one thing to settle before ordering is whether your canister can drive it. An Electro head takes current from the machine, which means the canister has to be set up for a powerhead with an electric hose and wand carrying that current down to the head. A plain suction hose has nothing to power it with, so the head will not run no matter how well the fitting matches.
Because it carries a motor and a spinning brush roll, a head like this has more that can wear than a passive floor tool. Bristles on the roll flatten or thin with use, and a head that starts sounding louder, running slower, or leaving strips of uncleaned carpet behind is telling you the roll is no longer agitating the way it did new.
