The upper bearing unit numbered #12/14 is a replacement bearing that supports the upper end of the motor shaft. It lets the shaft spin freely while holding it centered, carrying the load at the top of the motor assembly.
A worn upper bearing runs rough, adds noise and vibration, and can let the shaft wander, which strains the motor and drags on performance. Signs include a grinding or whining sound and unusual heat. Fitting a sound bearing returns the shaft to a smooth, quiet, centered spin.
