This catch is worked at every bag change, which over the life of a machine is several hundred cycles. The hook loses its bite, or the body cracks around the pivot after being closed against a bag that was not quite seated. A door sitting even slightly proud breaks the seal, and air then finds its way in around the bag rather than through it. The symptoms follow in order: reduced pick-up, fine dust appearing around the door edge, and a compartment that needs cleaning far more often than it should. A new catch pulls the door back down flat onto its seal.
